Most of rappers signed to major labels are always regarded as being the best regardless their inferior lyrics where as rappers signed to independent labels don’t come anywhere near to the title regardless their superior lyrics, the worst part is even the media contribute on oppressing independent albums, they give high-quality review to Major albums and dreadful review to independent albums and leave unconstructive criticism on top of that
If you can look at the current method being used to judge best rapper it is based on the value of albums sold and as usually only rappers signed to major labels will qualify, the current method being used is not fair and neither accurate, we all know that most of albums being sold by major labels don’t go straight to fans or consumers but go straight to major retails, so when they say Kanye West sold 500 000 units within a week they are basically saying major retails who have good business relationship with West’ label bought 500 000 units within a week, that’s why you find major retails full of old ‘unsold’ albums suffocating the shelves and you cannot find the albums of independent artist on shelves because they are being sold straight to Fans, the hip hop album should be judged based on the following basics of hip hop music: quality of lyrics, rapping technique, beats and the message being portrayed
Let’s look at Carter III for Lil Wayne and Maximum Strength for KRS One both of them where released on 2008 but from different kind of labels, Lil Wayne from Major Label, KRS one From Independent label, Carter III is now regarded is best selling album to date and it makes Lil Wayne a best Rapper but Maximum Strength did not sell that much and does not make KRS a best Rapper, but the truth is the lyrical content within Maximum Strength has got much strength than Carter III
